Faculty members from the West Virginia University Division of Art are currently exhibiting their new works in Pittsburgh at Artists Image Resource.
TitledCarbon Nation: New Work from West Virginia University Art Faculty, the show will be open Nov. 5 through Dec. 3.
An opening reception for the exhibit will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
The exhibit includes works of painting, sculpture, ceramics, prints, photography, graphic design, installation and wearable art. The WVU Division of Art has formed a partnership with Artists Image Resource that will provide educational and research opportunities for students, faculty and staff of the two institutions over the next several years. This exhibition is intended to inaugurate this linkage and reintroduce West Virginias art program to audiences in the Pittsburgh area.
The title,Carbon Nation,acknowledges thePittsburghcoal seam, Morgantown and Pittsburghs shared geological flooring. Its other reference, carbon dioxide, evokes effervescence, acidification and purification, characteristics ofcarbonationthat parody artistic production inCarbon Nation.
Artists participating in the exhibition include Robert Anderson, Robert Bridges, Cynthia Camlin, Shaila Christofferson, Eve Faulkes, Victoria Fergus, Juan Giraldo, Gerald Habarth, Alison Helm, Young Kim, Paul Krainak, Joseph Lupo, Bill Thomas and Naijun Zhang.
Artists Image Resource was created in 1996 to provide educational and creative services to the Southwestern Pennsylvania region. Its goal is to provide an active and vital imaging laboratory to support artists and facilitate creative activity. Since the late 1990s, it has executed more than 50 projects with professional artists and has been involved in a number of collaborations with area museums, including projects with international artists Kiki Smith and Richard Anuszkiewicz.
In 2002, Artists Image Resource was invited by the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation (MAAF) to be part of a major printmaking project that included nine significant printmaking studios throughout the northeastern United States. It has presented more than 25 exhibitions of contemporary printwork in Pittsburgh and at venues throughout the region and has presented workshops and public forums addressing community and global issues and exploring various techniques in contemporary image making.
Artists Image Resource is funded by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Allegheny Regional Asset District, The Heinz Endowment, The Pittsburgh Foundation, The Mary Hillman-Jennings Foundation, Sky Bank, an anonymous Pittsburgh donor and individual contributors.
