Christopher Willis of Independence and Shannon Logan of Baden, Pa., were named the 2005 Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer Wednesday night (Nov. 2) during halftime of the West Virginia University- University of Connecticut football game at Milan Puskar Stadium/Mountaineer Field.

This prestigious award, honoring two WVU students who have a record of exceptional academic achievement and extracurricular involvement, was added to the Universitys annual Mountaineer Week festivities in 1962.

Logan and Willis were selected from 10 finalists and represent the true Mountaineer spirit of WVU and West Virginia, Mountaineer Week Adviser Sonja Wilson said.

A graduate student in the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism, Logan is sponsored by the Student Government Association. She has a distinguished record of campus leadership that includes serving as WVU s student body vice president.

As an intern in the WVU Presidents Office, she worked alongside administrators, helped create a national TV commercial spot with WVU Television Productions and welcomed incoming freshmen and their families during orientation.

Besides these activities, Logan has also been active in the Mountain Honorary, Zeta Delta Phi sorority and School of Journalism Mentoring Program.

Her honors include being named to the Presidents and Deans lists.

When asked what makes a Mountaineers spirit unique, Logan wrote in her application:I have adopted West Virginia as my state of residence not only because I have felt the genuine friendliness of its people, but also the uniqueness of being a Mountaineer and the beauty throughout the state. It is a rewarding feeling to put on a Mountaineer shirt and become incorporated into a group of such accepting individuals while keeping your personal identity.

Willis is a double major in history and political science and sponsored by the Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) fraternity, Pre-Law Society and Office of Service Learning Programs.

He is president of the Pre-Law Society and Web master for both the Office of Service Learning Programs and West Virginia Campus Compact.

In addition, Willis has served as a member of the Advisory Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs and WVU Men Issues committees, plus he has held leadership positions in the Order of the Arrow, Boy Scouts of America and Team S.U.V. (Students Uniting to Vote).

Willislist of accomplishments also includes internships with Merrill Lynch and Micro Dynamics.

In his application, he wrote that pride is what makes a Mountaineers spirit so unique.

That pride comes fro the history of this great state,he said.It comes bearing a creed that Mountaineers are always freeI am proud of my history and my state for they have brought me up with a determined spirit and heart for my fellow Mountaineers.

  • Most Loyal Staff MountaineerSteve A. Taylor, 36-year staff member in the Office of Admissions and Records
