For one night in September, the West Virginia University campus will seem more like an early 20 th century coal camp when actress Karen Vuranch portrays union organizer Mother Jones.

Vuranch will appear as the matronly labor activist during aHistory Alive!performance at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, in the Mountainlair Rhododendron Room.

The WVU Department of English, Eberly College of Arts and Sciences and West Virginia Humanities Council are sponsoring the presentation.

Mother Jones devoted much of her life to bringing decent working and living conditions to people in all walks of life. She was instrumental in organizing industrial workers, including West Virginia coal miners, earning her the labelthe most dangerous woman in America.

Vuranch is a storyteller, actress and writer who performs throughout West Virginia and around the world, bringing the history of the state to life through reenactment and performance. She has a masters degree in humanities from West Virginia Graduate College and teaches Appalachian studies and theater at Concord College.
