A new fund has been established to provide scholarships for chemistry students in West Virginia Universitys Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.
Herbert and Hannah Siegel of Las Vegas have set up the Herbert Siegel Scholarship, which will support at least one scholarship for a rising junior or senior who is majoring in chemistry at WVU and demonstrates both financial need and academic achievement. A student who is a recipient one year is eligible for consideration in any other year.
The endowment will be administered by the WVU Foundation Inc. Scholarship recipients will be selected by the C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry.
Siegel earned a doctorate in chemistry from WVU before going on to a distinguished career. He taught chemistry at WVU for a term, then served on the faculty at Waynesburg ( Pa.) College before joining the Chemical Abstracts Service in Columbus, Ohio, where he held editorial and managerial positions.
He then entered the service of the International Labor Office in Geneva, eventually becoming head of the ILO s International Occupational Safety and Health Information Center, the position from which he retired.
The scholarship is established to recognize Siegels positive educational experiences in the Department of Chemistry at WVU .
I enjoyed working with Drs. Hall, Humphrey, Iffland, Lazzell, Muth and Popovich at WVU ,he wrote.I learned from Dr. Hickman that teaching involved acting and entertaining, but that a fine line existed so as to cause a student to remember the substance and not just the performance.
In addition to this gift, the Siegels are members of the Irvin Stewart Society, which recognizes those who provide for the future of the University through their estate plans.
I know, firsthand, that the quality of the faculty and students in the Department of Chemistry merit the trust and investment of the Siegels, said interim Dean Rudolph P. Almasy. They will be deeply appreciative of the Siegelsgenerosity.
The WVU Foundation Inc. is a private, nonprofit corporation that develops, receives and administers private gifts from individuals and organizations for the benefit of West Virginia University.
