West Virginia University officials are condemning the irresponsible behavior of some fans following WVU ’s 65-60 win last night over Texas Tech in the NCAA men’s basketball regional semi-final played in Albuquerque, N.M.

“It’s unfortunate that people who had nothing to do with the team’s victory stole the spotlight briefly after the game,”said WVU Vice President for Student Affairs Ken Gray.”Like the city of Morgantown , West Virginia University will hold accountable any students found in violation of the law. They will face swift and severe sanctions which could include expulsion from the University.”

The majority of WVU fans were jubilant after the victory and celebrated responsibly, Gray noted.

“I want to commend local police and fire officials along with our own University staff on scene for both the preventative measures taken before the game and responding quickly to any post-game problems,”said Gray.”Despite the fact that many people were in the streets celebrating the victory, I’m told there were no reports of serious injuries and few citations or arrests.”

Throughout this past week, WVU officials, including Coach John Beilein and players, encouraged students through e-mail messages and public service announcements to support the team by celebrating safely and responsibly.

“Our message has been clear: Good sportsmanship is expected of our fans. Anything less is not going to be tolerated,”Gray said.”But, as we all know, in the end, it’s up to the fans to act responsibly and with class.”

According to WVU Director of Public Safety Bob Roberts, the University and the city will increase security for Saturday’s NCAA regional final when the Mountaineers will battle Louisville.

“Law enforcement officials will meet later today to discuss additional measures for Saturday. The plan at this point includes clearing Grant Avenue prior to the game, increasing police presence throughout the city, and stepping up patrols during the game,”Roberts said.

“While the behavior of a few is truly disappointing, we can not let it overshadow the team’s outstanding performance or dampen the enthusiasm and support of thousands of loyal, responsible Mountaineer fans,”said Gray.
