“Shelter,”an acclaimed documentary film that chronicles the lives of five women in a Lewisburg, W.Va., domestic violence shelter, will be shown at West Virginia University on Monday, March 28.
The free showing will be at 7:30 p.m. in the first floor auditorium of the National Research Center for Coal and Energy, on the Evansdale campus.
WVU ’s Center for Women’s Studies is sponsoring the showing with the Morgantown Chapter of the National Organization for Women.
“Shelter”uses the stories of the five residents of the Family Refuge Center to challenge what its producers call an”indifferent attitude”to domestic violence issues in the country.
The film was produced by Appalshop, a production house in Whitesburg , Ky. , that creates movies, video, music and books focusing on life in Appalachia .
Ruth Kershner, a WVU visiting professor of community medicine who specializes in domestic violence issues, will introduce the film and lead a discussion after its screening.
