The West Virginia University P.I. Reed School of Journalism chose a long-time faculty member and an innovative adjunct from the public relations sequence as the schools 2004-05 Teacher/Adjunct of the Year.

Associate Professor Dr. R. Ivan Pinnell has served as the schools associate dean since 1991. He supervises admissions and related administrative requirements for undergraduate entry into the school.

“Dr. Pinnell is an effective classroom teacher who builds strong relationships with students and the profession,”said Acting Dean Maryanne Reed.”He is an advocate of and mentor to students in the public relations sequence.”

Charles”Chuck”Harman teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in health care communications and public relations at the school.

“Chuck is one of the most innovative, hard-working adjunct instructors in the school. He has developed new curriculum that gives students hands-on work experience with real clients,”Reed said.

Each year the schools awards committee chooses the recipients for teacher and adjunct of the year based on peer review and student input.

As coordinator of the public relations sequence since 1989, Pinnell established an intern program that increased internships from six to more than 50 per semester. He has extensive experience teaching at the college/university level in traditional and nontraditional institutions.

Active in student-related organizations, he is faculty adviser to the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Pinnell is a member of the WVU Committee on Student Organizations and Kappa Tau Alpha, a journalism honor society. He also serves as associate member of Mountain Service Honorary.

Pinnell earned a doctorate in communication studies from the University of Denver in 1984 and earned his undergraduate degree from WVU .

Harman currently directs the communications and corporate relations departments for NAMI , a national non-profit organization located in Washington, DC. In this capacity Harman oversees media relations, web communications, publications and corporate relations activities for NAMI s national office and its 1,100 chapters throughout the country.

As a SOJ adjunct, Harmans health care public relations class has developed public relations plans and launched those plans for clients such as the The Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute, the schools Cancer Project and West Virginias Veterans History Project.

Harmans other health care public relations experiences includes positions as a regional manager for a national health care corporation, marketing and community relations director of an academic teaching hospital and consultant to several health care organizations.

He has presented many workshops and keynote addresses on the issue of public perception of mental illness throughout the U.S. and abroad. He is a featured speaker at the World Public Relations Festival in Treiste, Italy, in June 2005.

Harman has co-authored several articles for professional journals and other publications. The most recent,”Individual and Professional Influences on News about Mental IllnessAn Exploratory Survey of Newspaper Journalists”(Aldoory, Eaton&Harman) was selected for presentation at the International Communication Association 2005 national conference. Harman has a masters degree in journalism from WVU and is accredited by the Public Relations Society of America.
