West Virginia University’s Center for Black Culture and Research is currently accepting applications for its Carter G. Woodson Awards, which annually honor WVU student achievement and the University’s outreach work to the African-American community.

The nine awards take in everything from leadership in the classroom and community, to achievement in the arts and athletics. Dr. Woodson, the awards’namesake, was a former West Virginia coal miner who founded Black History Month after earning degrees from the University of Chicago and Harvard.

Awards are open to students, staff and faculty.

This is the 15 th year for the awards. Applications may be obtained online at the Center’s Website,http://www.wvu.edu/~cbcr, or by calling 304-293-7029, ext. 110. The deadline for applications is March 25.

The awards will be given April 16 at a 6 p.m. ceremony at Hatfield’s restaurant, in the Mountainlair student union. Please RSVP at the above telephone number by April 8.

  • Fanny Lou Hamer Award , for Outstanding Leadership and Service to African-American Students
  • Marian Anderson/Alvin Ailey Award , for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts
  • Victorine Louistall Monroe Award , for Outstanding Leadership and Service to the African-American Community
  • Wilma Rudolph/Jackie Robinson Award , for Model Student Athlete
  • Frederick Douglass Award , for Outstanding Leadership and Service
  • Mary McLeod Bethune Award , for Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement
