Aiming to hit the right note with tech-savvy adults, West Virginia University Extended Learning is adding new online continuing education courses and making enrollment in them as easy as the click of a mouse.

The 12 continuing and professional education courses available over the Web effective this month range from existing classes in education, engineering and health to new offerings such as introduction to rock and blues solo guitar.

Additionally, students can register and pay for classes online through a new system called eServices.

Continuing and professional education is a relatively new component of Extended Learning, said Sherry Kuehn, coordinator of the service. These are noncredit courses that allow individuals to renew certification, prepare for exams, continue professional development or pursue personal interests.

Online courses include substitute teacher permit renewal training, basic cost engineering, basic engineering economics, community health education specialist review, paralegal certificate and certified legal assistant preparation, beginning and intermediate West Virginia genealogy, project management and Webmaster certificate.

Besides rock and blues guitar, other new offerings are personal finance management and original substitute teacher certification.

Registering and paying for the classes will be easier through eServices, a user-friendly, secure Web site activated in October, Kuehn said.

Students review the list of courses, make their choices and pay by credit card. WVU accepts VISA , MasterCard and Discover. Students will receive an immediate e-mail confirming their registration and another e-mail with class access information within five days.

Several WVU departments were involved in initiating eServices to make sure the site was secure and all facets and processes were thought out and addressed,Kuehn said.

Courses are designed to be individually self-paced, so individuals can register anytime, she added.
