A West Virginia University marketing professor who has studied consumersunderstanding of dietary supplement claims has been named to an endowed research position in the College of Business and Economics.
Paula Fitzgerald Bone is the first Nathan Haddad Professor in Business Administration. The position was established by the late Nathan Haddad of Charleston through an endowment to the WVU Foundation.
Bone specializes in consumer behavior, public policy and marketing ethics. Her current work focuses on consumersuse of dietary supplements and their interpretation of claims made on supplement labels. She and co-author Karen Russo France presented their findings to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last September.
She is also studying how consumers make trade-offs between short-term pleasures and long-term goals.
Her research has been published in Journal of Consumer Affairs, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Public Policy and Marketing, Macro Marketing, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Consumer Research and Journal of Marketing Research, among others.

Bone joined the WVU College of Business and Economics in 1987. She has a doctorate in marketing from the University of South Carolina and an undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama.
Dr. Bones research has brought her a national reputation as an outstanding scholar,said B&E Dean Jay Coats.She is an excellent choice for this professorship, and I am sure she will be very successful.
Bone is also active in fostering economic activity in West Virginia. Along with several groups of WVU marketing students, she recently worked on a project focusing on the economic development associated with the Hatfield/McCoy trail. She has also consulted with the West Virginia Jobs Investment Trust regarding the marketability of a new industrial product.
She co-chaired the 2000 Marketing and Public Policy Conference in Washington, D.C. She serves on the editorial review board of the Journal of Public Policy and Marketing and is on the board of the Marketing and Society Special Interest Groupa part of the American Marketing Association.
Bone has been recognized over the years for her teaching and research. She received one of six campus-wide WVU Foundation Outstanding Teaching awards in 2004 and the College of Business and Economics Outstanding Teacher Award in 2003. She has also received two Golden Apple teaching awardsan award given by WVU students and sponsored by the students of the Golden Key National Student Honorary. In 1999, she was named the College of Business and Economics Outstanding Researcher.
