How do we as humans spiritually and philosophically deal with the presence of evil in our lives?

Is evil always a stepping stone to good?

Can positive, personal salvation always come from the wreckage of an evil act?

The issue of evil in society will be taken up by West Virginia University students on Monday, Feb. 14Valentines Daywhen pre-doctoral fellow Matthew Lopresti officially presents his research on the subject to the WVU and Morgantown communities.

Lopresti, who is studying in the Department of Philosophy, will discussThe Problem of Evilfrom 4-5:30 p.m. at Elizabeth Moore Hall.

His research is focusing in part on the concepts and teachings of Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947), a Cambridge and Harvard professor whose work blended science, mathematics and philosophy as he addressed the nature of evil in his lifetime.

Lopresti is a doctoral student at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, and earned bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Toledo.
