West Virginia Universitys Community Music Program is currently registering students for a classes on The Alexander Technique, which has long been used by performing artists to enhance stage presence, improve breathing and voice capacity, and prevent injury.

Registration will take place through Feb. 10. Students may register for an introductory workshop, an eight-week group class or private lessons.

All the classes are taught by Lisa Levinson, who is a graduate of The Alexander Alliance in Philadelphia, a certified member of Alexander Technique International, and a registered movement therapist. She maintains a private practice working with musicians, actors, equestrians, children and people with pain issues. She also offers private lessons, classes and workshops throughout the greater Pittsburgh area.

The Alexander Technique is an intelligent way to solve the common movement problems that cause chronic pain and stress. It has proven to be a safe, self-care method for improving ease, balance, support and flexibility. The technique provides the student with the skills to relieve pain, prevent injury and enhance performance. It also is used by performing artists and teachers of the performing arts to reduce performance anxiety and promote inner calm.

The eight-week Group Class in Alexander Technique will be held Wednesdays during Feb. 16-April 13, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the WVU Creative Arts Center. There will be no class on March 16, which is during spring break. The cost for the eight-week course is $100.

Private lessons also are available. For more information, contact the WVU Community Music Program Office at 304-293-4841 ext. 3185 or ext. 3168 or visit the Web site athttp://www.wvu.edu/~music.
