West Virginia University officials will award $100 to the student who comes up with more than a recycled name for an end-of-the-semester garage sale to benefit the United Way.

The public sale will be sometime in May at Mountaineer Field, and proceeds will count toward the Students for United Way total yearly contribution, said Barbara Angeletti, WVU s recycling coordinator.

Tons of material are discarded or left behind by students when they leave town, and this sale would give them the option of donating their unwanted items, rather than disposing of or abandoning them,Angeletti said.

Items that students leave behind when they return home include furniture, rugs, lamps, bicycles, computer hardware, clothing, shoes, and various housewares such as dishes, cookware, coffee makers, toasters and irons, she noted.

WVU staff will collect all material donated by students living in the residence halls, while students living off campus can bring their material to the stadium, Angeletti said. Volunteers with the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties will staff the sale.

Long before the sale takes place, though, officials would like to have a catchy name for the event to help promote it. The Division of Student Affairs is offering a $100 cash prize to the student who comes up with the most appealing name.

Some schools call their salesDumpn Run,while others call theirsTrash to Treasure,Angeletti said.We would like to have our own name for ours.

All contest entries should be submitted no later than Jan. 31to Barbara Angeletti, WVU Physical Plant, P.O. Box 6570, Morgantown, WV, or Barbara.Angeletti@mail.wvu.edu .
