Velvet Brown, a graduate of the West Virginia University Division of Music who enjoys a professional career as a tuba and euphonium player, will present a guest artist recital at the Creative Arts Center on Friday, Oct. 29.

The program begins at 8:15 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (Room 200A) and is free and open to the public.

Brown received a bachelors degree in music from WVU in 1985 and currently performs as an international soloist, chamber ensemble performer, recording artist, conductor and orchestral player. She has made regular appearances throughout Europe, Russia, Japan, Canada and the United States. She also holds degrees from Boston University and Indiana University. She is noted for receiving the 1999-2000 William Fulbright Fellowship Vinciguerra Award.

She has served as principal tubist with the New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra (1989-1999), as well as substitute or additional tubist with the Detroit Symphony, Saint Louis Symphony, and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. She has also garnered high praise as a founding and current member of the Monarch Brass Quintet and Brass Ensemble, as well as one half of theGarda Duowith Italian pianist Roberto Arosio.

She is professor of tuba and euphonium at Penn State and previously taught at Bowling Green State University and Ball State University, and served as an associate director of bands at Boston University. She serves on the executive committee of the International Tuba and Euphonium Association and is also a board member of the International Womens Brass Conference.

Brown has released two solo CDs,VelvetandMusic for Velvet(Crystal Records), and has recorded music by the award-winning composer Neal Corwell for the Nicolai Music Label.
