West Virginia University students are reaching out to storm victims in the wake of one of the costliest and deadliest hurricane seasons in U.S. history.

The McNair Scholars Program has joined the Red Cross Mountain Laurel Chapter to collect money and items to send to families affected by the recent storms in Florida and last months typhoon in Taiwan.

When disasters like these strike, Red Cross volunteers are on the scene providing emergency shelter, food and counseling. Students wanted a way to help, so they organized a storm relief drive with the help of the local Red Cross chapter, said Betty Mei, McNair Scholars Program assistant director.

The student group is gathering anything that could help people rebuild their lives such as nonperishable food and hygiene products.

In particular, dry milk, dry foods of any kind (such as Ramen noodles and raisins), clothing for adults and children, children’s books, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and feminine products are wanted for typhoon victims.

However, financial donations are needed the most, Mei said. Checks should be made payable to the American Red Cross and indicate whether the money is for hurricane or typhoon relief.

Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the McNair Scholars office in the Student Services Center next to the Mountainlair; or Oct. 13-14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at theLair commons area, Boreman Hall front desk and Undergraduate Academic Services Center.

Monetary donations can also be mailed to the McNair Scholars Office, P.O. Box 6212, 109C Student Services Center, Morgantown, WV 26506 . The deadline is Oct. 16.
