The West Virginia University Wind Symphony will present its first concert of the fall semester at the Creative Arts Center, Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre.
Conducted by WVU Director of Bands Don Wilcox, the concert will also feature guest conductors John Hendricks III , who is associate director of bands at WVU , and graduate student Nikki Gross.
The concert will open with Overture toJulius Caesarby G. F. Handel. This transcription for winds was arranged by Don Wilcox.
The first half of the program also includesVolver a la Montana(Return to the Mountain) by Shelley Hanson. The song is based on several folk tunes of the Inca people of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
West Point Symphonyby Morton Gould was written for the West Point Sesquicentennial celebration at the request of Francis E. Resta of the West Point Academy. It was first performed in 1952, with the composer conducting. The first movement,Epitaphs,is a tribute to the thousands of West Point graduates who have given their leadership and their lives to this country. The march tunes that make up the second movement musically trace the development of a freshman through his years at the Point.
Following intermission will beFestivalby Clifton Williams. This work was composed in 1961 for band and orchestra simultaneously. The objective of this showpiece was to generate a festive mood�€one of gaiety and excitement.
Mass,fromLa Fiesta Mexicanaby H. Owen Reed, is serious and liturgical in nature. The principal theme is chant-like and is set amid sections representing the tolling of church bells. Nicole Gross will conduct this work.
