Dr. John Gottman, noted marriage counselor and author of The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work , will present the 2004 Helen Coast Hayes Lecture at WVU at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in Room G-24, Eiesland Hall. This lecture, open to the public, is sponsored by WVU ’s Eberly College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Psychology. A reception will follow the lecture.

Dr. Gottman is professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Washington, Seattle, where his research has focused on family interaction, children’s emotional development and social psychophysiology. He is the founder of the Family Research Lab and has written 36 books, including Why Marriages Succeed or Fail and Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child .

The Department of Psychology is extremely pleased to be able to host a visit by Dr. John Gottman, said Professor Katherine Karraker. A Dr. Gottman is widely respected for his research on marriage and family relationships. The theme of the Helen Coast Hayes lecture series, which is funding his presentation, is peace, and we believe that Dr. Gottman’s work provides much valuable information that can facilitate peace and well-being within the home environment.

The Helen Coast Hayes Lecture Series was established in 1998 by an endowment that provides permanent support for annual lectures on peace studies. The series explores a variety of topics in the humanities that affect peace, including the literature, history, sociology, psychology and philosophy of peace.
