U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., announced Wednesday that funds he added to federal appropriations legislation are on the way to Morgantown for West Virginia University (WVU)’s Forensic Science Initiative.

“West Virginia continues to be a fertile training ground for many of the nation’s most sought-after security professionals. The tragic events of September 11, 2001, and the ongoing war on terrorism have heightened the need for highly trained forensic specialists. WVU ’s forensic science programs are answering the call and helping to make America safer,”Byrd said.

Byrd added the $4 million for WVU ’s Forensic Science Initiative in the Fiscal Year 2004 Commerce-Justice-State Appropriations Bill. The program supports forensic science research and professional training, including WVU ’s first-of-its-kind specialized undergraduate degree program; develops new methods for collecting and examining evidence; and provides resources to improve forensic science in crime labs across the nation.

Benefiting from the education and training component of the Forensic Science Initiative, WVU ’s forensic degree program has grown significantly since its inception and is attracting students from throughout the nation.

“A growing number of students are eager to pursue careers in the forensics field, and practicing forensics specialists constantly need to update their skills. With my support, WVU ’s forensic program educates hundreds of students each year, and the Forensic Science Initiative is helping to expand the capabilities of state and local forensic science labs throughout the nation,”Byrd said.
