A delegation from the West Virginia University Native American Studies Program in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences will participate in the grand opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian next week in Washington, D.C.
Approximately 15-20 faculty and students will take part in Tuesdays (Sept. 21) opening ceremonies on The National Mall in front of the U.S. Capitol Building and also march in the Native Nations Grand Procession.
Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution Lawrence M. Small, NMAI Director W. Richard West, Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI) and Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-CO) will deliver opening remarks, which will be followed by cultural presentations and a blessing of the Mall museum.
Ellesa High, coordinator of WVU s Native American Studies Program, said,”We’re really excited to be walking in the parade, and we will be attending several other activities during the time we will be there.”
