West Virginia University faculty hornist Virginia Thompson, along with pianist James Miltenberger and trombonist Keith Jackson, will present a recital at the Creative Arts Center, Tuesday, Sept. 21.

According to Thompson, this is her debut recital on the natural horn, after 40 years of playing the valve horn. The natural horn is the 18th century predecessor of the modern horn.

Thompson will be performing on a Richard Seraphinoff reproduction of an Antoine Halari French orchestra horn (Paris, ca. 1810).

The program begins at 8:15 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (Room 200A) and is free and open to the public. It will include Le Rendez-vous de Chasse by Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868); Sonate pour le Pianoforte by Nicolas de Krufft (1779-1818); Elgia fr Naturhorn (1984) by Hermann Baumann; Ave Maria by Franz Schubert (1797-1828); and Concerto in D Major by Michael Haydn (1737-1806), featuring Jackson on alto trombone.

Thompson, professor of music at WVU , is a former president of the International Horn Society and has performed on many IHS symposium programs. Before coming to WVU , she taught at Coe, Cornell, and Grinnell Colleges and the University of Iowa, and held positions in several metropolitan orchestras.
