This national championship of 4-H forestry was begun in 1980. It is sponsored by the International Paper Co. Foundation and the Cooperative Extension Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In West Virginia, 4-H Youth Development programs and activities are coordinated by the West Virginia University Extension Service.

Participation in the invitational allows 4-H foresters to gain skills in citizenship, leadership and practical forest management. In the future, this knowledge will help them to manage forestland and handle environmental concerns.
