New, low-carb wraps arewhat’s for dinnerat West Virginia University Dining Services.
WVU -run Mean Gene’s, usually associated with burgers and fries, has expanded its menu to include low-fat, reduced calorie wraps for the carb conscious.
For about $4, students may choose from three kinds of wraps: grilled chicken, burger and BLT all of which have approximately 10 grams of carbs. A combo meal, which includes a wrap, side salad and drink, is available for $1 more.
The whole ideas came about because we received a lot of requests from students and regular customers, said Larry Koay, Dining Services assistant director.Everyone’s into it, even fast food chains. WVU ’s Mean Gene’s is the first one to have a low-carb entree rolled out specifically for us.
If the wraps sell well, at the end of the semester, WVU will consider working with other vendors on adding low-carb fare at other Dining Services operations. Executive chef Eric Filburn is developing menus.
Koay noted other healthy eating options on campus: grilled chicken subs (similar to Subway’s) at McCoys, Bits&Bytes and the Lyon’s Den; wraps and chicken, spinach and Caesar salads at the Waterfront Café.
The subs are doing very well. In fact, almost 40 percent of all subs sold are chicken subs,he said.
In addition to offering healthier menu choices, Dining Services and the University’s nutrition and wellness task force established Wellness Centers at residence dining halls earlier this semester to educate students about good eating habits.
