More than 150 students will participate in West Virginia University’s annual Community Medicine Poster Presentation from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, at the Health Sciences Center.

The session is designed to highlight WVU students’work from eight different classes: men’s health, women’s health, gender and violence, environmental health, aging women, gerontology field experience, rural elderly and principle-based management.

This is a culminating project for students enrolled in these classes, said Ruth Kershner, assistant professor in community medicine. They pick a health topic specific to their class, and make a poster to create awareness. This will be a very visual event and an opportunity to see our students at their best.

The topics will include: the effects of sickle cell anemia on African-American women, violence against women in times of war, male breast cancer, rural elderly and unintentional injuries, activities for older adults in nursing homes and agism.

WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr. will begin the presentation with brief opening remarks in the John Jones Conference Center (ground floor) followed by the poster viewing from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Health Sciences cafeteria.

During the evening, the Friendship Room, a service agency which offers support and education for people suffering from mental illnesses, will also be recognized for its efforts to help the community.

This event is free and open to the public. Food and refreshments will be provided.
