Jason Borg, a 1997 West Virginia University graduate, has been named Distinguished Alumnus of the School of Physical Education’s sport management program.

Borg, eastern regional sales manager for Tommy Armour Golf Co., will accept his award during the 12th annual WVU Sport Management Summit at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at the Pines Country Club.

Jason Borg exemplifies the professional graduate that our program produces,said Dallas Branch, summit coordinator.He has been very willing to give back to the program in many ways, an example for other alums to follow in that regard. We couldn’t be any prouder of his selection as our 2004 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient.

Borg joined Tommy Armour Golf Co. in 1997 as sales and service coordinator. In this capacity, Borg served as the key contact for all domestic territory and regional sales managers. In March 1998, Borg was promoted to international sales and marketing coordinator, assuming the responsibility of managing the day-to-day business and operations of 50 international distributors for Tommy Armour Golf.

In August 1998, Borg chose the sales role and relocated to Morgantown. After $1.2 million in sales in his first year and an increase of 167 percent, Borg was approached about adding to his responsibilities Dick’s Sporting Goods, the 125-store national account based in Pittsburgh.

Borg was again promoted in 2002 with responsibilities for three accounts, encompassing 500 stores in all regions of the United States. While in this role, Borg produced sales revenues equating 21 percent of total company revenue.

In January 2003, Borg was promoted to eastern regional sales manager for Tommy Armour Golf. He manages and leads a team of 15 territory managers from Maine to Florida, while still continuing to manage the Dick’s Sporting Goods account, now at 170 stores. In this capacity, he is responsible for 28 percent of company revenue.

Today, Tommy Armour Golf Co. is headquartered in Toronto and owned by the Dayton, Ohio-based Huffy Corp. In the history of golf club sales, Tommy Armour ranks second in clubs sold, with the ever-popular 845 model among all competitors.

Borg was named Eastern Region Salesman of the Year in 2002 and has served on the Tommy Armour Golf Rep Advisory Board since 2001.

The 32 year-old Borg, originally from Minnesota, graduated from James Wood High School in Winchester, Va. He is a member of the Mountaineer Athletic Club and resides in Morgantown with his wife, Christy, and their 2-year-old son, Connor.

The annual Sport Management Summit brings together past WVU alumni from the graduate program. Keith Tribble, Orange Bowl CEO , will be the guest speaker for this year’s summit.
