Former West Virginia University basketball standout Hot Rod Hundley will return to his alma mater Friday, April 16, as part of the School of Physical Education Distinguished Lecture Series.
Hundley, who also played professionally and now announces Utah Jazz games, will speak at 2 p.m. in the Mylan Puskar Center, Thomas Room. His talk will beMarketing and Promoting the National Basketball Association.
Hundley played for the Mountaineers in the mid-1950s, averaging 24.5 points per game over three seasons and finishing second in career points with 2,180. He dazzled fans with his flashy play, which included behind-the-back passes and fancy dribbling.
He was the first pick in the 1957 NBA draft and played with the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers from 1958-63. He appeared in two NBA All-Star games.
He has been announcing Jazz games for 30 years and previously was an announcer and analyst for Lakers and Phoenix Suns games. He has also co-authored two autobiographies:The Clown(1970) andHot Rod Hundley, �€~You’ve Gotta Love It, Baby!’(1998).
Hundley, who left school early to go pro, returned to WVU in May 2000 to get his diploma after completing his Regents Bachelor’s of Arts degree. He was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.
