The West Virginia University Community Music Program is now accepting applications for its fall 2004-spring 2005 music scholarships.

Scholarships are available for students to participate in private lessons, music classes, or ensembles, according to Community Music Program Director Jeanne Frieben. She said two types of scholarships are available: WVU Community Music Program Scholarships and WV Wine and Jazz Festival Scholarships.

Community Music Scholarships are based on a combination of talent and need. Applicants for these scholarships are required to perform two musical pieces of contrasting styles and they may audition on more than one instrument. The auditions are scheduled for May 6, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Creative Arts Center.

WV Wine and Jazz Festival Scholarships, donated by the Morgantown Wine and Jazz Festival Committee, are available to families in need of financial assistance to help pay for music lessons, ensembles or classes in the WVU Community Music Program. Applicants must be residents of West Virginia and need to show proof of financial need by providing a copy of the last page of their 2003 tax return. In cases where the tax form is not easy to provide, please call the Community Music Program to discuss other options with the director.

Applicants for both scholarships do not need to be current students in the Community Music Program and they may apply for both scholarships at the same time. If eligible for both, only the largest scholarship of the two will be awarded.

All scholarship applications are due in the WVU Community Music Office by April 27. For more information, please contact the WVU Community Music Office at (304) 293-4841 ext. 3168 or ext. 3185. Office hours are 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
