A camp-out, speakers and games are some of the activities planned for Habifest 2004 Wednesday (April 7) at West Virginia University.
WVU ’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity is organizing the event to bring attention to the need for adequate housing for Monongalia County residents. The theme of this year’s Habifest isWhere Will You Sleep Tonight?
Starting at noon, the group will be having fund-raising booths and games on the Mountainlair plaza green to raise money to build homes for low-income families.
At 6 p.m., homeowners who have benefitted from Habitat for Humanity will tell their personal stories.
That night, students will hold a camp-out to promote awareness about poverty. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 33 million Americans live in poverty.
Bethany McCallister, a WVU Habitat for Humanity member, said students will give up their warm beds and sleep out in cardboard and wood boxes on the’Lair green to experience what it is like to be homeless. The camp-out continues through 8 a.m. Thursday.
