West Virginia University will applaud the achievements of its best and brightest during Weekend of Honors April 16-18.

The annual event will feature three days of recognition ceremonies, tours, open houses, presentation of class rings and more.

“This is both an important and enjoyable occasion as the University community comes together to recognize those whose contributions have advanced the schools mission of education, research and service,”said WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr.

Colleges, schools and units will have recognition ceremonies for students, faculty, staff and their families throughout the week and weekend. Some will also offer tours and open houses.

Two public events highlight activities Friday, April 16.

An honorary recognition ceremony will be from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Mountainlair Ballrooms. WVU officials will recognize between 120 and 135 students inducted into three honoraries: Helvetia, for sophomores; Chimes, juniors; and Mortar Board, a national senior honorary. Membership is based on academic merit, leadership and service.

The Weekend of Honors convocation will be at 7 p.m. in the Ballrooms. The ceremony, presided over by Hardesty, showcases the outstanding accomplishments of students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Those in town for the weekend can catch a preview of the 2004 Mountaineer football team during the annual Gold-Blue intrasquad game at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at Mountaineer Field. Students who have purchased the official class ring can pick them up at a special ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 18, at Erickson Alumni Center. Hardesty will present the rings, then he and his wife, Susan, will serve as hosts at a reception for students and their families.

The College of Creative Arts will stage several productions throughout the weekend in the Creative Arts Center. These include”Picasso at the Lapin Agile,”a Steve Martin comedy about a fictional meeting between Picasso and Einstein, 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Sunday, Gladys G. Davis Theatre; opera scenes from Benjamin Brittens”Turn of the Screw,”7:30 p.m. Friday and 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Falbo Theatre; and”The Odyssey,”Homers epic adapted for young audiences, 2 p.m. Saturday, Davis Theatre.
