The West Virginia University Concert Band, assisted by the University Choir and the WVU Wind Symphony, will present a concert Tuesday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyell B. Concert Theatre of the Creative Arts Center.
The Concert Band, conducted by John Hendricks and Dearl J. Drury, will open the program withPortrait of a Cityby Philip Sparke, and also will performSleep,by Eric Whitacre, with the University Choir. Other selections includeDo Not Go Gentle Into the Good Nightby Elliot del Borgo andScenes from the Louvreby Norman Dello Joio.
Following intermission, the WVU Wind Symphony, conducted by Don Wilcox and guest artist Don Freund, will performRideby Samuel R. Hazo, andNativitas!by Freund, who will conduct.
The final work will be the Wind Symphony performing Freund’s composition,Earthdance Concerto,with Freund performing on piano.
Freund is professor of music composition at Indiana University School of Music. A native of Pittsburgh, he studied at Duquesne University and earned graduate degrees at the Eastman School of Music. He has composed more than 80 works, ranging from solo, chamber, and orchestral music to pieces involving live performance with electronic instruments, music for dance and large theatre works. He is also active as a pianist, conductor and lecturer.
