With spring around the corner, people may already be looking for ways to avoid the summertime blues. West Virginia University could have the cure.

WVU transforms itself into a summer camp for all ages between commencement and the start of fall semester. Summer activities include academic and sports programs for youth, summer courses for college-age students and numerous workshops for young and old alike.

The registration deadline is early for many of the programs, so interested participants should not delay.

Among this summer’s offerings:

Mountaineer Adventure Camps. Offered through the Student Recreation Center, these programs teach children outdoor skills, effective communication and how to get along with others. Day camps for children ages 8 through 12 will be offered June 14-25 and June 28-July 9. Overnight camps for participants ages 13 through 15 will be July 12-16 and July 19-23. The camps are $395. National Youth Sports Program. This program, offered June 17-July 23 through the School of Physical Education, employs sports as a backdrop to encourage underprivileged youth to pursue a college education. More than 250 children ages 10 through 16 participate in sports, acquire good health practices and learn the benefits of higher education. * WVU Musical Arts Camp.* Aspiring musicians in grades seven through 12 hardlytake fiveduring this intensive week of rehearsals, lessons, master classes and special concerts arranged by the WVU Department of Music. Students attending the July 11-17 camp will receive instruction in band, choir, jazz, orchestra and piano. Costs range from $250 to $400, and scholarships will be offered. West Virginia Writers’Workshop. Budding authors get pointers from the pros during four days of lectures, workshops, one-on-one instruction and readings. The workshop, organized

Summer Sessions. Outdoor courses, study abroad and online classes complement the hundreds of courses offered on campus this summer.
