A West Virginia University alumna who serves as the nation’s chief information officer will be the keynote speaker at the 13 th annual WVU Computing and Technology Symposium March 30-31 in the Mountainlair student union.

Karen Evans, administrator of the Office of Electronic Government and Information Technology in the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, will speak onAchieving Breakthrough Performance in Information Technologyat 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, in the Gluck Theater. The tech symposium, sponsored by the WVU Office of Information Technology, will be from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. March 30 and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 31.

In her post, Evans oversees implementation of information technology throughout the federal government. This includes advising the director on the performance of information technology investments, directing the activities of the Chief Information Officer Council and supervising use of the E-Government Fund to support interagency partnerships and innovation.

Her other responsibilities include information security; privacy; seeing that people with disabilities have access to information technology; and making sure government information is accessible, disseminated and preserved.

Evans has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in business administration from WVU .

The Computing and Technology Symposium is the principal technology event for WVU and provides opportunities for participants to gain insight into a variety of instructional, networking and computing technologies.

Activities will include presentations by faculty, staff and vendors; exhibits; and demonstrations of some of the latest advances in computers and technology. Vendor exhibits will be in the ballrooms; presentations will be in the Monongahela, Laurel and Rhododendron rooms.

There will also be a drawing for the grand door prize: a loaded Pentium 4 Celeron computer system donated by Veritech Inc.
