An advocate for the rights of battered women and a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer whose photos mirror the human condition and uncover its ills will speak at West Virginia University to help recognize social workers.

March is Social Work Month, and the WVU Division of Social Work will sponsor a keynote address featuring Stacey Kabat and Stan Grossfeld at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 25, in Room G25 Eiseland Hall. The address is open to the public.

Kabat is co-producer and co-director of the Academy Award-winning short subject documentary,”Defending Our Lives,”which tells the story of eight women serving time for defending themselves against their batterers. She is a recipient of the Reebok Human Rights Award, the Clara Barton Humanitarian Award and has been recognized as a”Hero Among Us”by the Boston Celtics.

Grossfeld is an associate editor and award-winning photographer with the Boston Globe. He has traveled the world for photo projects that mirror the human condition and uncover its ills. He has been awarded two Pulitzer Prizes and named New England Photographer of the year five times.

His stories often include the plight of the world’s children, such as”When Kids Have Kids,”a story set in rural Maine in 1996.

Co-sponsors for the event include the College of Creative Arts, Division of Art, Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Applied Social Sciences, the School of Nursing, the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism and Women’s Studies.

Kabat and Grossfeld will also speak to students in nursing, journalism and creative arts during their stay.
