The Traverser Saxophone Quartet will perform in concert at the West Virginia University Creative Arts Center, Friday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Falbo Theatre. The event is free and open to the public.

Members of the group include: Curtis Johnson of the WVU music faculty; David Wright, assistant professor of music at West Virginia Wesleyan College; Jonathan Brink, a graduate student in saxophone performance at WVU ; and Michael Sakash, assistant professor of instrumental music at Washington&Jefferson College.

Seeking out new music is one of the Quartet’s main objectives. The name Traverser meanscrossing overand describes the varied music the group performs-everything from core classical repertoire to jazz and funk styles. Also, the members switch instruments throughout the performances, creating a continuously varied ensemble texture.

The Traverser Saxophone Quartet has already given concerts across the states of West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Minnesota, at events such as the World Saxophone Congress XIII . They hosted the first annual Traverser Saxophone Symposium at West Virginia Wesleyan College in February 2003 and founded the Appalachian Saxophone Orchestra.

With a CD to be released in the spring of 2004, the Quartet is preparing for a concert tour to Germany, Italy and Greece.
