Much like the night watchmen of earlier times, West Virginia University campus police will be doing nightly residence hall checks leading up to spring break to make sure all is well.
Operation Lock-Out consists of foot patrol officers concentrating in one area and securing any unlocked room they find. The patrols will occur between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays over the next two weeks at various residence halls.
The purpose of this program is twofold. First, it conditions the residents to be more aware of their own personal safety and the protection of their valuables. Second, when residence hall rooms are secured, there should be a notable decrease in thefts.
This crime prevention program is ongoing throughout the year, but special emphasis is made before extended University breaks. Spring break is March 13-21.
The WVU Department of Public Safety will be conducting Operation Lock-Out in the following locations:
- Tuesday, March 2Brooke and Braxton towers
- Wednesday, March 3Bennett and Lyon towers
- Thursday, March 4Sterling Ridge Apartments and Fieldcrest
- Tuesday, March 9Dadisman&Stalnaker halls
- Wednesday, March 10Boreman North&South
- Thursday, March 11Arnold Hall and Apartments
Students living off campus are also reminded to secure their valuables and residences if they are going to be away for break. For tips and information, call DPS at 293-3136 or go online athttp://www.wvu.edu/~facserv/CrimePreventioninter.htm.
