Planning a college education has just gotten easier thanks to two new advising options offered by the Undergraduate Academic Services Center at West Virginia University.

The first, online academic advising, allows students who have declared pre-majors and have a grade point average of at least a 3.0, to plan and make adjustments to their class schedules as well as receive their STAR TERM PIN by e-mail with their adviser.

The second option is group advising in which UASC students meet in groups, according to their pre-major or rank, in a computer lab. Advisers will show students how to access their own WVU records and transcripts and use the online STAR process to select and enroll in classes. Other topics include how to use the WVU online undergraduate catalog and the D/F repeat policy.

In addition to these two options, the UASC is offering workshops that will cover what students need to do to get into graduate school and how to apply for financial aid. These workshops will be held from 3-5 p.m. Monday, March 1; from 10 a.m.-noon Tuesday, March 2; and 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, on the third floor of the White Hall Computing Lab.

In these sessions, students will learn the necessary steps in obtaining scholarships to defer the cost of their education as well as information about prestigious fellowships and scholarships, such as the Rhodes, Marshall or Udall, said Anita Mayer, UASC s new interim director.

These workshops will be especially helpful for sophomores and juniors, she added. Students may sign up by contacting Buffy Vehse, UASC operations coordinator, at buffy.vehse@mail.wvu.edu .

Other workshops will help students plan their fall 2004 class schedule and get their STAR TERM PINs. For more information about these sessions or about group advising, contact Vehse at 304-293-5805 ext. 32304. UASC students are encouraged to check their MIX e-mail accounts for updates.

For students who want to meet one-on-one with their advisers, the UASC will be offering extended advising appointment hours until 7 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays now through April 13. Call 293-5805 ext. 1 for an appointment.
