The West Virginia Water Resources Institute at West Virginia University will co-sponsor a public meeting Thursday, Nov. 13, regarding flooded underground mine discharges. The meeting will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Washington, Pa. beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“Researchers at WVU , the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University have been studying the phenomenon of underground mine pool flooding and the potential impacts of discharges of those mine waters on Monongahela Basin rivers and streams,”said Paul Ziemkiewicz, WVWRI director.”We will be updating the public on our progress at this meeting.”

Members of the project team will give their assessment of the current conditions of mine water levels, and projections of where and when discharges of those mine waters might occur, he said. A panel session is planned to include industry, regulatory and environmental group perspectives.

The project and meeting are funded by the U.S. Department of Energy-National Energy Technology Laboratory and coordinated by the WVWRI .
