Even though there are almost two shopping months left until Christmas, only a few more days remain to register for the”Morgantown Shopping Spree”sponsored by West Virginia University’s Student Recreation Center.
Participants in the holiday walking club will walk around the Rec Center track until they have equaled the distance to various designated shopping areas. They will then have the opportunity to enter drawings for gift certificates to those shopping areas.
“We designed this program to help people remain active over the holidays, and since it ends right around the holidays, we thought a little extra spending money would be a good incentive,”said Sherri Restauri, program manager.
The holiday walking club, the first of its kind, is open to WVU faculty, staff, students, employees of affiliates and family membersboth Rec Center members and non-members. Participants are asked to register at the Rec Center prior to the start of the event on Monday, Nov. 10. The event will continue until Friday, Dec. 19. The registration fee is $5 for members and $10 for non-members.
All registered members are encouraged to attend a program meeting to explain all of the details of the Holiday Walking Program on Monday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Rec Center meeting room. Free food will be provided.
The program’s organization is simple. As contestants exercise and record their mileage and time, it will be posted on a map of the Morgantown area. On this map will be various shopping goals and as participants reach each goal they will be entered in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate for that location. Locations include Books-A-Million, Wal-Mart, the Seneca Center and downtown Morgantown. Participants who reach all the goals will be entered into the grand prize drawing, a $150 gift certificate to the Morgantown Mall.
Upon registering participants will receive a packet including a map of the shopping areas, registration forms for the drawings, weekly log forms and an activity conversion chart for activities other than walking.
