Postcards from Mexicois the title of a digital photo exhibit that will be on view in the Creative Arts Center main lobby Nov. 1-21. The photos were taken during the WVU course in graphic design and art history held last summer in Guanajuato, Mexico.
A public reception for the exhibition will be held Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m. in the main lobby.
Sponsored by the WVU Division of Art and the International Studies program, the three-week summer course took place in May and was coordinated by WVU Graphic Design Professor Cliff Harvey and Kristina Olson, professor of art history.
The course offered students a unique opportunity to experience the art, design, architecture and culture of Mexico. While there, they completed a photography project, under the direction of Harvey, calledPostcards from Mexico.
The students used facilities at the Universidad de Guanajuatos School of Design, and learned from Universidad de Guanajuato design professors Carmina Barrosso and Raul Sotos. They also visited many historic sites, museums and cities to study architecture and art. Many of the photos were taken in Guanajuato.
Guanajuato is the capital of the state of Guanajuato and a college town,Harvey said.Located about 230 miles northwest of Mexico City, with an altitude of 6,583 feet, it is an historical and picturesque town which has preserved much of its colonial charm. The city is a maze of cobblestone streets and alleys that wind around steep hillsides, opening on to vistas of beautiful churches and small plazas.
The course in Mexico will be offered again during the summer of 2004, beginning May 10. Again, the focus will be a photographic workshop culminating in an artist book prepared and designed from the photo research.
