A workshop on conflict resolution will part of a marriage enrichment retreat Nov. 7-9 at WVU Jacksons Mill sponsored by the West Virginia University Extension Service.

“Fighting Fair: Conflict Resolution for Couples”will teach couples more effective ways to resolve disputes and will demonstrate alternative approaches to deal effectively with conflicts before they escalate into resentment and antagonism. Participants will learn to identify”fair”and”unfair”techniques couples use in their conflicts. Spouses will find out about methods they can use to transform their”fights”into problem solving. The workshop will be taught by Frances P. Allen, a licensed mediator at the Counseling and Wellness Center in Parkersburg.

The workshop is part of”Growing Together: A Lifetime JourneyA Marriage Enrichment Retreat.”The event’s goal is to help couples build and develop their interpersonal relationships. Sessions focus on relationship building, mending broken relationships and developing effective communications styles. Workshops will be taught by licensed counselors, family therapists, social workers, religious leaders and academic professionals.

Barbara N. Armstrong, a licensed marriage and family therapist, will give the keynote address. She is emeritus professor of marriage and family relations at the University of Akron. She was a WVU Lewis County Extension agent and a 4-H club member and leader for several years.

Other speakers include: Neal Newfield, associate professor of social work, West Virginia University; Susan Newfield, associate professor of nursing, WVU ; Cheryl Riley, licensed professional counselor, WVU ; Larry LeFlore, center director, WVU Extension Service; Rev. Marvin Carr, associate professor of Christian education, West Virginia Wesleyan College, Buckhannon; and Sarah Carr, retired 4-H agent, schoolteacher, Buckhannon.

Registration fees are $425 per couple. After Oct. 17, an extra $25 will be added. Fees cover two nights of private room lodging (double occupancy), meals, exercise materials, a copy of the book”Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work”and a group photo. Those couples who wish to commute may deduct the $105 lodging cost from the registration fee.
