The WVU Chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society recently attended the society’s 26th annual convention in Chicago, Ill.
Chapter President Allison Fleming, a history and Spanish major from Ravenswood, accompanied by six WVU delegates, accepted the prestigious Key Chapter Awardpresented to only 25 chapters worldwide that demonstrated exceptional community service and campus involvement.
The chapter also won first place in campus awareness, and outgoing president Stephanie Taylor, a 2003 public relations graduate from Clarksburg, captured one of 12 2003 Golden Key Scholar Awards worth $10,000. Taylor will use the stipend to attend law school at West Virginia University this fall.
During the awards ceremony, Gale Rhodes, council president from the University of Louisville, recognized the chapter asone that raises the bar for others in serving their community.”
Robert Kent, faculty advisor, said,”These student leaders have achieved their distinction by having opportunity presented to them. They have developed the opportunity to be of service to their community that was at hand. As their advisor, I could not be more proud of a group of students. They represent West Virginia University extremely well.”
During the year, the students conducted the chapter’s induction ceremony; held two Kaplan campus test drives; partnered in helping United Way raise $10, 000 for”Rockin on the Riverfront;”assisted BOPARC in”Help Save the Rock;”published two newsletters; sponsored the Golden Apple Ceremony to recognize outstanding faculty; conducted Sophomore Recognition; held an honorary member reception; assisted with Toy Mountain; held Graduate Night Out; and cooked dinner for residents at Rosenbaum and Ronald McDonald Houses.
Golden Key International Honour Society was chartered at Georgia State University in 1977. The society invites only the top 15 percent of juniors and seniors to be members and awards over a half million dollars in scholarships each year to members.
Last year, Golden Key inducted over 95,000 members. The WVU Chapter was chartered in 1979 and inducted 350 new members in October 2002. For further information, contact Kent at 304-293-8220.
