Leading professionals and educators in the arts will be on the lookout for the next van Gogh or Mozart when 81 young artists converge on the West Virginia University campus June 15-July 5 for the Governors School for the Arts.

The three-week residential programbeing held this year and next at the College of Creative Artsis for exceptional arts students from West Virginia who have completed their sophomore year of high school. An interdisciplinary faculty of artists and educators will provide individual and in-depth group instruction in dance, theater, music and visual art. Support for the school comes from the West Virginia Department of Education and the WVU provosts office.

“The Governors School for the Arts has proven to be a vital step in the development of some of the most creative young minds in West Virginia, and faculty members in the College of Creative Arts are honored to be involved,”said William Winsor, director of the school and associate dean of the college.”Participating students will get a collective social experience and an intensive artistic experience by discipline. They will leave enriched by these experiences.”

Courses will be held in WVU s Creative Arts Center, the states only educational facility solely dedicated to the instruction and performance of all visual and performing arts. Students will stay at Fieldcrest, WVU s newly acquired residence hall formerly known as Madison House.

Activities get under way with a 3 p.m. opening ceremony Sunday, June 15, in the Mountainlair Ballroom. WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr. and a representative of the governors office will join School for the Arts faculty in welcoming the students.

Each day students will undergo intensive instruction in their chosen artistic genre. Classes include ceramics, printmaking, electronic media, studio arts, instrumental music, voice, world music, jazz, music theory and history, theatre arts, acting and performance, theatre history, dramatic literature and criticism, scenic costume and lighting design, dance, and computer-assisted design for the stage.

There will also be daily performances or presentations by WVU faculty and guest artists, a trip to Pittsburgh for a matinee performance of”Miss Saigon”and a visit to Washington, D.C., for a concert by the National Symphony Orchestra.

The program concludes Saturday, July 5, when students showcase the projects they have been working on during the three-week period.
