About 4,000 incoming freshmen and their parents will learn about college life this month as part of West Virginia University’s New Student Orientation.

Students attending orientation will be able to get a jump-start on their academic careers by registering for classes and taking placement exams for certain courses, said Regan Fritsch Bruni, New Student Orientation coordinator.

They will also have their photos taken for their student identification cards, meet their resident faculty leaders, attend various informational sessions and tour the campus, Bruni added.

“Orientation is very important for incoming students so that they start the school year off on the right foot,”she said.”It is also important for parents to know the services available at the University so they can help guide their children in the transition to college life.”

WVU offers both a standard one-day orientation session for students who have already visited the University and a 1.5-day extended program for those unfamiliar with the campus, Bruni said. Students, parents and guests have the option of staying overnight in the Evansdale Residential Complex during either the standard or extended programs.

The extended session offers more social activities, she added. These include a mini version of WVUp All Nightthe University’s alternative weekend programand small group meetings for students from the same hometowns to foster friendships and encourage car-pooling.

Standard orientation sessions will be Wednesday, June 11; Thursday, June 12; Friday, June 13; Thursday, June 19; Friday, June 20; Wednesday, June 25; Thursday, June 26; Friday, June 27; and Monday, June 30. There will also be a standard program Wednesday, Aug. 13, for students who cannot attend in June.

Extended sessions will be June 9-10, June 16-17, June 17-18 and June 23-24.

WVU also offers orientation sessions for nontraditional and transfer students. Those sessions will be Friday, June 13, and Tuesday, Aug. 12.

Students who have not registered for orientation should call the Orientation Office at 304-293-2264 or visit the Web site athttp://www.arc.wvu.edu/NSS/orientation/index.htmlto register for an August session as there are no available sessions in June.
