Dont look for things to slow down at West Virginia University come summer.

Activities ranging from adventure and sports camps for kids to cultural enrichment programs for teen-agers complement WVU s academic mission as the days grow longer and trees and flowers burst forth in full bloom.

The second annual Mountaineer Adventure Day Camp at the Student Recreation Center will introduce children ages 8 through 14 to outdoor pursuits such as camping, hiking, canoeing, swimming and scuba diving. The camp is available to both the WVU community and general public.

“Our experienced outdoor recreation leaders have designed a program that appeals to all levels of skill and ability,”said Sherri Restauri, program manager for special events and summer programs at the center.”Our goal is to provide a teaching environment that is safe, fun and fosters an atmosphere of fairness and mutual respect.”

The camp will be held in two sessions. Session I will be June 16-27, and Session II will be June 30-July 11 with no camp being held July 4. Hours will be 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and the camp will be offered on weekdays only.

The registration fee for Session I is $370 prior to April 30 and $395 thereafter. Any sibling of a child registered will receive an additional $50 discount. The fee for Session II is $330 with early registration, $355 thereafter and the same sibling discount. Maximum enrollment is 48 for Session I and 36 for Session II.

  • Sports Camps. For youngsters aspiring to be the next Barry Bonds or Michael Jordan, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is offering numerous sports camps throughout the summer. The camps, for children of all ages, offer instruction in the fundamentals of baseball, basketball, football, gymnastics, speed and strength, tennis and wrestling.   • National Youth Sports Program. At least 250 children ages 10 through 16 will learn about healthy lifestyles and planning for their future during the National Youth Sports Program offered June 20-July 25 by the School of Physical Education. The nationally sponsored program for economically disadvantaged youth will be held in the WVU Coliseum and Shell Building. Participants play sports and receive instruction about such topics as health, higher education and career opportunities.   • Governors Schools. West Virginias gifted young artists will have the opportunity to develop their talents during the Governors School for the Arts June 15-July 6 at the College of Creative Arts. WVU faculty will provide individual and group instruction in dance, theater, music and visual art to students who have completed their sophomore year of high school. Meanwhile, the states premier young mathematicians and scientists will sharpen their analytical skills during the Governors School for Math and Science July 6-18 (for eighth-graders) and July 23-Aug. 1 (for seventh-graders). Student teams under the guidance of faculty from WVU and elsewhere will employ mathematical and scientific principles to describe the planning, development and operation of a theme park. Participants have already been accepted for these programs.
  • West Virginia WritersWorkshop. For those who truly believe the pen is mightier than the sword, the WVU English Department is offering its annual West Virginia WritersWorkshop July 24-27 at Stalnaker Hall. Established authors will lead a series of workshops, panel discussions, readings and lectures on writing. Cost of the workshop is $280 for full participation, $110 for attending the conference without enrolling in a workshop/tutorial or $40 per day.   • Summer courses. WVU is offering more than 2,000 credit courses on and off campus and on the Web. Summer Session I is May 20-June 27, and Summer Session II is July 1-Aug. 8.
