New WVU student leaders to address parking concerns, establishment of student hotline
In West VirginiaUniversitys first online Student Government Association election that concluded Thursday night, Feb. 27, WVU students cast 2,337 votes to elect a new president and vice president, 15 Board of Governors members and two representatives to the Athletic Council.
Charlie Battleson, a senior aerospace engineering major from Buffalo, N.Y., was elected SGA President. Jordan Workman, a junior double major in political science and economics from Madison, W.Va., is SGA s new vice president. The two ran unopposed.
“We are pleased to have been chosen to lead WVU s student body in the coming year,”Battleson said.”We will work hard with students and administration to meet all of our campaign goals.”
Specifically, Battleson and Workman want to give students more input into parking decisions, and they plan to establish a special student hotline to answer questions and provide information specifically tailored to student concerns.
They also will work toward improving Mountainlair services, including expanding food vendor offerings, establishing a bank within the student union and providing more space for Student Organization offices, they said.
Giving students more input into SGA matters, improving WVUp All Night offerings and increasing student job opportunities also are goals.
“We are extremely excited to continue the work of this years SGA administration, and we also plan to investigate these and many other issues while in office,”Battleson and Workman said.
Throughout his college career, Battleson has been involved as a resident assistant, a member of the Mortar Board National Honorary, a member of the Resident Assistant Council, Campus Publications Board, Sigma Gamma Tau National Honorary of aerospace engineers, and the WVU /NASA Microgravity Research: NASA Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program. Battleson has also served as the SGA chief of staff.
Workman has been involved as a member of the Board of Governors, Phi Sigma Kappa, associate member chairman of IFC , Social Justice Committee Chairman, a former member of the WVU crew team and a Mountaineer Maniac.
Fifteen students were elected to slots on the Board of Governors. They include: Alayna Adams, a pre-occupational therapy junior from Shinnston, 866 votes; Andrew Bernstein, a junior political science major from Charleston, 951 votes; Jacob Breziniski, a pre-history freshman from Athens, W.Va., 935 votes; Carolina Cabezas, a junior history major from Parsippary, N.J., 900 votes; DJ Casto, a sophomore pre-business major from Clarksburg, 1,126 votes; and Casie Coughlin, a sophomore pre-business and economics major from Clarksburg, 907 votes.
Others are: Cathy Goffreda, a political science sophomore from Spencer, W.Va., received 1,056 votes; Shannon Logan, a sophomore public relations major from Baden, Pa., 1,083 votes; Anna McCarty, a sophomore biology major from Morgantown, W.Va., 929 votes; Kristie Muchnok, a junior political science major from Hopwood, Pa., 1,071 votes; Stephanie Octave, a public relations junior from Grafton, W.Va., 1,033 votes; Gretchen Russell, a junior occupational therapy major from Hockessin, Del., 974 votes; Kriston Walton, a junior English major from Morgantown, W.Va., 924 votes; Melissa Yergovich, a junior management information systems major from Fairmont, W.Va., 973 votes; and Hamed Afshari, a sophomore biology major from Morgantown, 953 votes.
Elected to the Athletic Council was Samuel Madia, a sophomore economics major from Clarksburg, with 1,280 votes, and Chris Williamson, a political science junior from Dingess, W.Va., with 1,261 votes.
More than 3,000 votes were cast in this years election, nearly 1,000 more than last year, said Stephanie Taylor, a member of the SGA election committee. She attributes the larger-than-normal numbers to the new online election procedure, which allowed students to vote via their Mountaineer Information Xpress, or MIX , accounts.
The election results were announced about 10:45 p.m. Thursday during WVUp All Night activities in the Mountainlair.
