WVU Student Recreation Center observing National Collegiate Health and Wellness Week
Students and the public alike can learn more about staying healthy as West VirginiaUniversitys StudentRecreationCenter celebrates National Collegiate Health and Wellness Week March 3-7.
“National Collegiate Health and Wellness Week is a way of increasing public awareness about the importance of staying fit and healthy,”said Sherri Restauri, program manager at the center.
The week begins at 4 p.m. Monday with events and opportunities anyone in the Morgantown area can take part in. Events will include an American Red Cross blood drive from 1-7 p.m.; free glucose, eye and blood pressure screenings; free chair massages; and free body fat composition testing. There will also be many information tables set up by the School of Dentistry, CarruthCenter for Counseling, Student Health Services, Habitat for Humanity and Make-A-Wish, among others.
Also Monday, the RecreationCenter will be offering free day passes to the first 50 people who bring in five nonperishable food items for St. Ursalas Food Pantry. All eligible WVU employees and their families can use the facilities at the center for free that day as well. Members and eligible WVU employees, meanwhile, can participate in a free”Try Climbing”event from 4-9 p.m. at the centers 50-foot climbing wall.
Throughout the rest of the week the RecreationCenter has planned many events for members from 5:30-8 p.m. Tuesdays events include a free aerobics class, Discover Scuba and Wellness Jeopardy. Wellness Jeopardy is patterned after the famed trivia game show, with contestants testing their knowledge of health issues to win a $25 gift certificate to the WVU Bookstore.
The RecreationCenter will also sponsor a lecture series throughout the week on topics such as sports performance, nutrition and safety tips for spring break. There will also be a Flick-N-Float and a beer goggles obstacle course. The winner of the obstacle course will win a $25 gift certificate to the WVU Bookstore.
A Wellness Week Modified Triathlon will kick off at 4 p.m. Thursday. Competitors will have to swim 450 yards (nine laps down and back), bike 4 miles and run 2 miles. The winners, one man and one woman, will be awarded an MP3 player. Anyone interested needs to register at the front desk by March 5.
