The FBI and local authorities are seeking any information that could lead them to the person who placed a phone call to MECCA ’s 9-11 center Friday, Feb. 21, at 9:45 a.m. indicating bombs had been placed on West VirginiaUniversity’s Downtown Campus.
Chief Bob Roberts of WVU s Department of Public Safety said the call was placed from a pay phone at the Ashebrooke Liquor Outlet on Beechurst Avenue.
WVU ’s Department of Public Safety was immediately contacted, and officers along with the department’s K-9 unit were dispatched to various campus locations. In addition, building supervisors and deans were contacted to be on the lookout for suspicious materials or individuals.
“While this was undoubtedly a hoax, in this day and age we take all of these types of threats seriously,”Roberts said.”Fortunately, we found nothing, but it ended up wasting a lot of manpower and time that could have been used more effectively elsewhere. We are interested in finding out the name of the person that acted so irresponsibly.”
Roberts reminded the public that making a bomb threat is a felony offense, punishable by 1-3 years in prison, up to a $1,000 fine or both.
Those with information are asked to contact Roberts at 304-293-3136.
