The West Virginia University Alumni Association will honor state legislators and leaders during its 12th Annual Legislative Reception Wednesday, Feb. 26, in Charleston. The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Charleston Embassy Suites, with dozens of academic and administrative units from the University and its branch campuses hosting booths to discuss their missions and goals. The venue also allows each the opportunity to illustrate the kinds of research and progress taking place within the University.

“Many of our state leaders are graduates of WVU or have very close ties to the University, so we really look forward to the chance each year to host them and express our appreciation for their hard work and support,”explained Steve Douglas, CEO of the WVU Alumni Association.

The University continues to attract the attention of corporate America because of its innovative programs and steady advances in technology and research. An example is the partnership with Diebold, Inc. that has brought a pilot security program involving hand-scanning technology to the Morgantown campus. Special biometrics devices have been installed at Boreman North residence hall that allow students to have their palms scanned to gain access.

“The Legislative Reception has been key for us to discuss with our leaders the advances occurring at the states flagship university and how they impact all of West Virginia,”explained Douglas.

Since the reception is the same evening as the WVU s mens basketball game at Syracuse, the Association has made arrangements for a 16-foot screen to project the game during the reception.

“We are always looking for ways to incorporate new ideas into this event. We know how much our state loves Mountaineer basketball, so this seemed like a great opportunity to bring a good game to our guests,”Douglas said.

The event is by invitation only.
