The classic style of Mozart comes to life as the WVU Opera Theatre program presents an English translation of the comic opera”Lunatics and Lovers”Jan. 28-Feb. 1 at the CreativeArtsCenter.

Directed by Robert Thieme, the program is a joint production of the WVU divisions of Music and Theatre&Dance. Performances in the Gladys G. Davis Theatre begin at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 28, 29 and 31. There also will be a 3:15 p.m. matinee performance on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Originally translated into German, the opera is also known as”La Finta Giardiniera,”which literally means”the skys gardener.”The title alludes to two characters in the opera who disguise themselves as gardeners.

The opera takes place outside the home of the Governor of Lagonero and in the surrounding forest at the end of the 18th century. Many of the characters assume disguises and new identities in this fascinating tale filled with murder, revenge, intrigue, jealously and love.

There is also mistaken identity and misplaced affections, as the Countess Violante Onesti, who is believed dead (but is disguised as a garden girl named Sandrina), falls in love with Count Belfiore, who is betrothed to another woman. Things get even more complicated when the Governor of Lagonero, who is”Sandrinas”employer, falls in love with the Countess Violante.

The plot takes another twist when the Governors chambermaid named Serpetta falls in love with him, while Roberto, Violantes servant, falls in love with Serpetta.

“It has a curious blend of comic and serious elements that begin to reveal Mozarts true genius with mature dramatic style,”Thieme said.

“Lunatics and Lovers”premiered in 1775 and is Mozarts second comic opera, written when he was only 18 years old.

WVU voice students in the cast include: Lynn McCormick as Countess Violante Onesti; Joshua Jannota as The Governor of Lagonero; Robert Strauss as Count Belfiore; Courtney Folden as Arminda; Ceci Grasso Dadisman as Cavalier Ramiro; Charlene Angelini as Serpetta; and David Scoville as Roberto.
