“Doppelgänger,”an exhibition of work by West Virginia University Division of Art faculty that explores mirror imaging and the idea of doubling, will be on view in the WVUCreativeArtsCenters Laura Mesaros Gallery Jan. 16-Feb. 1.
Doppelgänger is a German noun that refers to a ghostly double or counterpart. Used in art, doppelgänger can take on a more general meaning of”double image.”
“Doppelgänger: WVU Faculty Exhibition”opens with a public reception Thursday, Jan. 16, at 5 p.m. at the Mesaros Galleries. In addition, the art faculty will present Gallery Talks about the exhibition Wednesday, Jan. 22, and Thursday, Jan. 30, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Laura Mesaros Gallery.
WVU faculty members participating in the exhibition include specialists in all media: Robert Anderson, ceramics; Jennifer Blazina, printmaking; Robert Bridges, printmaking; Shaila Christofferson, sculpture; Eve Faulkes, graphic design and book arts; Victoria Fergus, fiber arts; Cliff Harvey, graphic design and book arts; Alison Helm, sculpture; Ann Hoffman, electronic media; Young Kim, photography; Paul Krainak, painting; Kim Owens, painting; Janet Snyder, art history; Sergio Soave, printmaking; William Thomas, mixed media; and Naijun Zhang, painting and drawing.
The exhibition premiered at Oglebay Institutes Stifel Fine Arts Center in Wheeling, where it was on view during Nov. 21-Dec. 31 as part of a partnership between the WVU College of Creative Arts and Oglebay Institute.
In addition to the”Doppelgänger”exhibition, work from the WVU Art Collection will be on view in the Paul Mesaros Gallery through Jan. 18.”Works on Paper: Prints from the WVU Art Collection”features works selected by collection curator Robert Bridges and students in his curatorial practice class at WVU .
All Mesaros Galleries events, including art lectures, exhibitions and receptions, are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are noon to 9:30 p.m., Monday-Saturday. The galleries are closed Sundays and University holidays. Special individual or group viewing times may be arranged upon request.
