The West Virginia University Board of Governorsdecision on Nov. 8 to extend President David C. Hardestys contract to serve as president of WVU for five years €through June 2007 €was approved today (Nov. 15) by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.

“WVU faces great challenges and opportunities in the years ahead,” BOG Chairman Hank Barnette said.”President Hardesty has demonstrated his outstanding leadership in the seven years he has served as president. The BOG unanimously and enthusiastically decided to extend his contact for five years, the maximum allowed by law.”

He added,”We are also fortunate to have Susan Hardesty serving WVU . More specifically, under Susans leadership, the Mountaineer Parents Club serves 11,500 families with 63 clubs and 17 state chairmen. Over the last year, she has participated in 80 speaking events and attended more than 200 WVU events. She and President Hardesty are a remarkable and highly qualified team dedicated to the interests of WVU .

“And while greatly deserving of an increase in compensation, in view of the difficult economic circumstances facing the state and WVU , President Hardesty declined any increase this year, so his compensation will remain the same.”

He concluded:”President Hardesty has the full support of our Board and we are committed to working with him and his staff.”

Hardesty commented,”I am delighted to have been asked to continue as president of my alma mater. Susan and I look forward with great anticipation to serving WVU for the next several years.”

Hardesty, a 1967 graduate of WVU where he served as student body president and earned a Rhodes Scholarship, was named president of WVU in 1995.

The presidents annual salary remains at $250,308.
